Dedication

Professor Červený was an extraordinary scientist, widely admired by the geoscientific community. His primary work, firmly rooted in theoretical seismology, was complemented by a strong interest in understanding the challenges faced by the industry. He was a great teacher, always ready to explain even the most fundamental concepts with great clarity and detail. This is what makes his papers, particularly his seminal textbook Seismic Ray Theory, such unique and widely respected resources. His scientific curiosity and genuine passion were exemplary, inspiring many students. Beyond his scientific expertise, Professor Červený embodied a truly human spirit, always ready to build bridges. For newcomers, this Student Award serves as a tribute to his spirit, aiming to ignite a similar passion for advancing our beautiful science. Biography

The distinguished Czech geophysicist Prof Vlastislav Červený has died at the age of 90. His whole professional life was associated with the Department of Geophysics of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University in Prague. He graduated in 1956, becoming associate professor in 1966 and full professor in1987.
During his career he became a world leading scientist in seismic ray theory and one of the most cited seismologists. He published three well-known books and numerous publications. He founded the consortium Seismic Waves in Complex 3-D Structures in 1993 and led it for over 25 years, attracting worldwide attention from both industry and academia. He was also a founder of the famous series of workshops ‘Seismic Waves in Laterally Inhomogeneous Media’, which proved an ideal platform for meetings of seismologists from the East and West during the Cold War era. Professor Červený was an active member of several international institutions, member of the German Academia Leopoldina and the Academia Europaea, and an Honorary Member of the European Association of Geoscien tists and Engineers and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. He received the Beno Gutenberg medal of the European Geophysical Society (now European Geosciences Union), the Maurice Ewing medal of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the Ernst Mach medal of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the Gold Memorial medal of Charles University. His work will continue through his numerous students and colleagues who always enjoyed his generous and kind nature and benefited from his wisdom and great insight.
Prof Červený will be remembered as a great educator, who never hesitated to explain even the simplest facts down to the smallest detail. This is what made his book Seismic Ray Theory such an extremely well readable textbook. Those who had contact with him will treasure visits to his office at Ke Karlovu and the tea or coffee prepared by his secretary Mrs Drahotová. He will be greatly missed.

Životopis

Profesor Vlastislav Červený působil celý svůj bohatý profesní život na Matematicko-fyzikální fakultě. Po absolvování studia pracoval na fakultě od roku 1955 jako asistent a později jako odborný asistent. Habilitoval se v r. 1966 a profesorem byl jmenován v roce 1987. Již v sedmdesátých a osmdesátých letech minulého století se stal průkopníkem světového formátu v rozvoji paprskových metod v seismologii, o čemž svědčila i skutečnost, že v té době byl jedním z nejcitovanějších vědců na Univerzitě Karlově. V sedmdesátých letech vydal i dvě úspěšné monografie a jeho práce na tomto poli vyvrcholila v roce 2001 vydáním knihy Seismic Ray Theory. Profesor Červený publikoval odborné články do pokročilého věku, i dnes jsou jeho vědecké práce hojně citovány. Významným počinem pana profesora bylo i založení konsorcia Seismic Waves in Complex 3-D Structures v roce 1993, které existuje dodnes. Jde o projekt, který je otevřen zahraničním průmyslovým společnostem, výzkumným ústavům a univerzitám a je orientován na teoretické i praktické využití poznatků šíření vysokofrekvenčních seismických vln ve složitých 3-D prostředích.
Profesor Červený byl zvolen za aktivního i honorárního člena řady mezinárodních institucí, jako jsou německá Akademie věd Leopoldina, Academia Europaea, the European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists atd. Jeho vědecká práce byla mnohokrát oceněna i oficiálně. Jmenujme například udělení medaile Beno Gutenberga Evropskou geofyzikální společností nebo medaile Maurice Ewinga od Society of Exploration Geophysicists a v neposlední řadě i udělení medaile Ernsta Macha Akademií věd ČR a zlaté pamětní medaile Univerzity Karlovy.
Hlubokou stopu v Čechách i v zahraničí zanechal jeho osobní přínos při výchově studentů a mladších kolegů, kteří pod jeho vedením získali první vědecké ostruhy a později také dosáhli mezinárodního věhlasu.
